'Murals and Portraits', an exhibition of works by Richard Avedon, opened at the Gagosian Gallery on Friday. The show consists of large-scale murals alongside accompanying portraits. Subjects include influential personalities in art and politics from the 1960s and '70s such as Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg and Brigitte Bardot (above). The exhibition runs until July 6.

Sotheby's hosts its annual Travel, Atlases, Maps and Natural History auction on Wednesday. Highlights include a lot of 250 woodcut maps of Southeast Asia dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries, paintings of early 18th-century Calcutta, and the first English edition of the Atlas Japonensis presented by the East India Company to the emperor of Japan in 1670.

New Orleans

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival comes to a close today. The historic event is now in its 43rd year and this year's headliners included Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Al Green, The Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bon Iver. For many though, the undisputed highlight of the three-day event was the 50th anniversary reunion of The Beach Boys (left).

Berlin

Animal lovers and sadists alike should hurry to the internet to cast their votes to determine the fate of a presumably innocent lamb. Berlin-based art students have said they will kill a lamb with a guillotine if internet users tell them to. As of today there are 11 days left to have your say on the website (die-guillotine.com) and at the time of writing the 'no' votes were ahead by a narrow margin.

Wroclaw

Poland's Asymmetry Festival has been staged annually by Wroclaw's Firlej Club since 2009. The festival is intended to showcase musicians who are pushing the boundaries of their respective styles with a focus on the avant-garde. This year's festival, which wrapped up yesterday, was especially worth the trip and featured Killing Joke, Sleep, My Own Private Alaska and Fugazi bassist Joe Lally's latest solo project.
