In-play betting better guide for Whyte
There could be some nervous moments for those taking the short odds about Douglas Whyte in the Jockey Challenge, but a succession of top notch rides in the final four races should see him salute.
Whyte has rides in eight of the 11 events, but only has one mount - first-starter Keep-A-Pin in the griffin race to start the day - out of the first three races.
Howard Cheng Yue-tin is a threat at $12 with his front-loaded book of rides. He starts the day with hopes in five of the first six races, although he has just seven rides overall. Cheng pilots Peter Ng Bik-kuen-trained pair Expedite and Expedience in the opening two races, both of them single figures in betting, followed by Carthage (race four), Sunshine Boy (race five) and Panther Run (race six) in the middle part of the programme.
Another hope at double-figure odds is Tim Clark. He rides good each-way chances Liberator and Euphemism for David Ferraris. But regardless of what lead Whyte gives up early, he'll be near impossible to hold out late, especially if race favourite Dominant delivers him maximum points in the Queen Mother Memorial Cup (race four).
If the $1.80 offered last night about the Durban Demon doesn't appeal, maybe hold off and wait for better odds during the middle part of the meeting. Whyte's best rides are in races eight through 11, where he partners odds-on pop Simple, followed by Ambitious Dragon, New Vision and Voile Rouge.
