If the beaches are calling or you've suddenly found the inspiration to trim the flab, then the Sony Xperia Active provides a twist to smartphones that might be the perfect fit for you.

The Xperia Active combines all the uses of a smartphone with a tough, water-resistant and dust-proof casing. So the Active is designed to go where you go, even if that means in the pool or rain.

You don't get the biggest screen on the market at only 3 inches, or the sharpest camera around. But you do get a compact package that should fit snugly in your bag or sports gear, no matter what you do. On the downside, the smaller display does mean more difficulty when typing texts or e-mails.

The Active also comes with an eyelet for a lanyard, so you can hang it around your neck or clip it to your bag.

Now that you can get active with the Active, the phone will also help you keep track of your progress. The phone comes with Walk Mate, a pedometer app, and iMapMyFitness, an app for keeping tabs on your workout routine as well as connecting to a separate heart rate monitor - available separately.

Powering all that is a Qualcomm 1GHz processor, the Android 2.3.6 operating system, a 5-megapixel digital camera, and HSPA mobile data connectivity at 7.2mbps.

A version of the Active, co-branded with surf brand Billabong, is available for around HK$2,080.

Pros: water and dust resistant, compact design, fitness apps

Cons: small screen, average camera
