The vibe: the latest upstairs addition to the main Lan Kwai Fong strip, Vice is at odds with itself: the shoebox-size interior is your standard LKF bar, blending an everyday cramped club with a Causeway Bay karaoke vibe. But behind its shaded patio doors is a space three times the size of the bar itself, a large, open-air escape from the teeming bustle of the city.
The drinks: a wide selection of international wine, beer and spirits, including some rarer blends and vintages from across the world. But the cocktails are a point of pride here, coming in either regular or signature varieties. Standards such as the bourbon julep (HK$90 each) are an interesting find in a city obsessed with mixing spirits with soda, even if the decision to mix it with salt instead of sugar was mystifying. Meanwhile, the signature cocktails are seemingly on the menu to separate big spenders from their money: the Lycheelicious and Uber Mojito (HK$130 each), for example, simply add sprigs of mint or chunks of ginger to the regular lychee martini and mojito, and for that you pay HK$40 extra.
The verdict: although more likely to attract poseurs than connoisseurs, the one saving grace for the discerning drinker is the outdoor space - perfect for parties and get-togethers. Its size and quiet vibe make it a real gem compared withall the other cramped alfresco venues in the inner city.
