New trend on the web

Many students in Hong Kong are told by their teachers to read English newspapers like the SCMP to build their vocabulary. But how many of you fully understand the correct ways to use those new-found words? The website Newswordy can be a great tool for you.

Newswordy compiles words that are frequently used in the news in a simple yet user-friendly site. Besides defining the words, the site gives you links or tweets to articles to show how they are supposed to be used. Most of the words featured are often misused or used out of context.

Newswordy is updated daily and you can subscribe to the updates via e-mail, leading to a great improvement in your vocabulary.

Companies use all sorts of ways to keep their Twitter followers entertained. This includes the live tweeting of special events. One hospital in Houston, Texas, in the US, took this to the extreme.

On Wednesday, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Centre live-tweeted an operation on a human brain.

A neurosurgeon gave a play-by-play description of the surgery on Twitter as another surgeon operated to remove a brain tumour from a patient. Examples of the tweets went something like this: 'Dr Kim begins drilling into the #skull with a perforator, making several small holes. #MHbrain' and 'Dr Kim uses a little knife to cut between the 2 veins. This is called the corticectomy'.

To make sure that followers knew exactly what was happening, photos and videos of the actual surgery were tweeted as well. For those who are not easily upset, you can see them at @houstonhospital. Warning: there are actual shots of the brain.
