Busy celebrities often struggle to find enough time for their families, but some charitable souls put aside time to help those in need. On Mother's Day, actors Shu Qi, Richie Jen Hsien-chi and Alex Fong Lik-sun sacrificed celebrations with their mums for a worthy cause.

The stars participated in the annual Aveda walkathon on Sunday in aid of the charity A Drop of Life. The organisation helps people living in drought-hit rural areas of Gansu province. The first walkathon took place eight years ago.

Dismay wasn't quite an issue for Shu, who said she regularly showered her mother - who lives in Taipei - with gifts and quality time even when it wasn't Mother's Day.

Meanwhile, Jen, who donated HK$280,000 to the charity, said he was going to Beijing after the walk and wouldn't have time to celebrate with the mother of his children.

Other celebrities including fashion designer Dorian Ho, socialite Lelia Chow Mei-fung, along with Candy Lo and her son joined numerous supporters, many bringing their families, on the four- kilometre walk on Hong Kong Island. Others chose a more challenging 23 kilometre hike.
