McVitie's All Butter Shortbread 
These fingers have a fairly faint taste of butter, and are relatively dense and hard. The smooth, greyish, dry crust isn't very appealing, but they do leave the least grease on your fingers - handy if you're snacking in the office. If you're looking for a rich, crumbly shortbread, this isn't it, but it makes a decent afternoon tea biscuit.

Marks & Spencer All Butter Scottish Homebake Style Shortbread Squares 
 These neat tiles sit in a tartan box with a window that shows off the sugar-dusted, golden brown crust. Bite in and the crisp exterior gives way to an almost impossibly light crumb, although this ends up becoming a little too pasty in the mouth. It's also one for sugar fans, being the sweetest of those tried.

Daylesford Organic Scottish Mini Shortbread Hearts 
 For a tiny 125 gram box, these are the priciest of the lot despite containing palm oil as well as butter. Even so, this variety is rich and buttery, and the sweet little hearts really hit the spot. They're crumbly but don't disintegrate into a powdery, pasty mess in the mouth, and they have pleasing crunchy bits of sugar.

Orgran Premium Gluten and Dairy Free Shortbread Hearts 
These are the same shape and size as the Daylesford hearts, but they're so different. Pale lemon yellow in colour, with a distinctively sharp crunch, the buttery flavours are overshadowed by the whiff of the corn and rice used instead of flour. Not strictly shortbread, but they're not a bad biscuit.

Walkers Pure Butter Shortbread  
 There's a reason this tartan box has become almost synonymous with shortbread itself. Firm to the bite, with a slight crunch, clear-cut layers that are neither too dense nor too sweet, and just enough buttery fragrance to excite butter fiends but not too heavy. These are Baby Bear's shortbread - just enough of everything.
