Helper held over HK$5m in missing jewellery
A 43-year-old Indonesian domestic helper was arrested on suspicion of stealing jewellery worth about HK$5 million from the Wan Chai home of a businessman yesterday. Police were called to the Kennedy Road flat when the jewellery was found to be missing from a safe. Police said they found several remittance receipts for tens of thousands of dollars each in the helper's room.
Minister insists hiring mainlander was lawful
Recruitment of a non-permanent resident into the chief executive-elect's office was lawful, Secretary for the Civil Service Denise Yue reiterated in responding to criticism by lawmakers of the hiring of 27-year-old mainlander Chen Ran as a project officer in the office.
Call for special help for the elderly deaf
The Neighbourhood and Workers Service Centre called on the government to provide training in sign language to social workers and care givers of elderly deaf people, and to set up special homes for such elderly. It said the city had about 8,000 deaf people who could only communicate with sign language, and the number would rise with the ageing of the population.
Sha Lo Tung niche project open for public comment
An environmental impact assessment report on a columbarium-cum-nature reserve proposed at Sha Lo Tung has been released for public consultation until June 19. The developer wants to build 60,000 niches on the land and has pledged to spend up to HK$120 million to conserve the site. The report is on the Environmental Protection Department's website.
Divers find body inside sunken sampan
Fire Services Department divers found the body of a 62-year-old coxswain inside his sampan, which sank off Tit Cham Chau, Tseung Kwan O. Six passengers swum ashore when the boat sank at 6.30pm on Sunday.
Expat arrested over rape of teenager in Wan Chai
Police arrested a 38-year-old expatriate man in his Central flat on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl in a Wan Chai flat on Sunday.
