Ajax, Chelsea players make it a magical week for football fans
Last week was an exciting one for young footballers in Hong Kong.
Last Friday, 50 local primary school students attended a training session hosted by Dutch team Aegon Ajax at the Po Kong Village Road Village School. Ajax players put students from Po Leung Kuk Primary School through two hours of tough football drills. They also showed off some fancy ball-handling skills to the star-struck audience.
'Watching the players pass the ball with their feet and head back and forth without dropping it was amazing,' said Nico Kwan Hei-shun, a Primary Four student from the school. He had his boots covered with signatures from Ajax players.
Students who worked as junior reporters for a school project, too, had a field day. Hui Hei-tung, a Primary Five student, asked Ajax players about their life as professional footballers.
'I had prepared a number of questions to ask them,' he said. 'They were all nice and friendly.'
British powerhouse Chelsea FC, too, sent representatives to Hong Kong last Thursday to launch a youth football programme.
The team announced a new project to help 6,000 youths aged 14 to 17 living in inner-city areas in the New Territories and Kowloon. The aim of the programme is not only to teach football but to equip needy youths with important life skills such as teamwork and leadership.
