Relaxed gelding gets job done - beating a classy one, too

Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's double kicked off with Happy Champion, who drew a good barrier for the first time in and that helped him see off promising newcomer, Holyangleholy, in the third. In six previous runs, Happy Champion (Alex Lai Hoi-wing) had drawn low once - up the straight course where it is a disadvantage - but he relished a softer run yesterday. 'I think the second horse is very good so I was worried about him before the race but my horse is a year older, had more experience and that was probably why he was able to beat him,' Yiu said, but sees upside to the son of Flying Spur. 'He was always nervous so we kept him to 1,000m but, in the last two weeks, he has settled down and started to relax.'
