Winifred Lai credits Lady Gaga for funky line in sunglasses
Luxottica Group, the world's largest eyewear company, brought together an optometrist and a fashion maven to show that glasses can be both functional and fashionable.
The preview of the autumn-winter 2012 eyewear collections distributed by the group was held at the Wooloomooloo Steakhouse in Wan Chai on Tuesday. Dr Kee Chea-su, an assistant professor from Polytechnic University's optometry school, talked about eye protection, while fashion writer Winifred Lai Kin-wai shared her views on the latest trends.
'Glasses are becoming more and more important in accentuating one's outfit,' Lai said. 'There are a lot more choices, as the number of fashion brands jumping on the sunglasses bandwagon is growing. They may not be a necessity, but it's something fun and people's mentality is changing - they're more open to funkier designs now, thanks to pop icons such as Lady Gaga.'
Eyewear from brands such as Miu Miu, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Coach, Ray-Ban and Vogue Eyewear were laid out for guests to try on.
Although Lai shared tips on choosing the right pair of sunglasses, she struggled to choose between Prada shades in funky apple green and elegant beige. She finally decided to take both pairs home, where, Lai said, she already had a collection that was growing out of control.
