Hayley Chan Hei-man's Olympic dreams have been shattered. A training accident left the Hong Kong windsurfer, pictured, with three broken ribs. She is in hospital in Britain.

Chan, 21, took a year away from her studies at Hong Kong University in pursuit of her dream. She collided with a 49er racing dinghy travelling at full speed. Hong Kong coach Rene Appel was in a motor boat watching Chan train at the Portland and Weymouth Olympic sailing venue. He rescued her from the water.

He described her injuries as 'serious,' but said she is recovering.

'It will impact our Olympic preparations but it is too soon to say by how much,' Appel said. 'Hayley is a real fighter, and she is already applying the same focus and determination to recovery as she does to training'.

The Olympics is just 52 days away and the chances of her recovering for it in time are slim.
