The many pros of regular exercise
Nowadays many Hong Kong teenagers bury themselves in their studies or sit in front of their computers all day long. They do little exercise or play sports. Yet sufficient exercise is very important and brings many benefits.
First, exercise can improve your fitness and encourage you to be more active. It boosts your blood circulation and immune system, helping to fight off infections. It also reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer.
In addition, by exercising regularly and playing sports, you can build up your willpower and improve your sense of sportsmanship.
Then there is this: exercise can help relieve stress. School life places a heavy burden on many students. Imagine some 40 youngsters being crammed into a stuffy classroom for several hours. They may be restless yet they need to pay attention to the teachers.
Exercise is one way they can release their pent-up energies and do so in a fun way with their friends.
It gives you a golden opportunity to socialise with your peers and make new friends. Many sports require co-operation and teamwork. For example, basketball is a popular sport in Hong Kong because players can bond and enjoy themselves.
Some people say students should concentrate more on their studies instead of wasting their time on sports.
I disagree. A healthy body is essential for a healthy mind. If you are weak and sickly, how can you be expected to stay focused in the classroom?
So take my word: doing exercise regularly has many benefits that far outweigh the few disadvantages.

3D movies aren't always top-notch
3D movies have become all the rage recently. The technology gives people a new movie experience, which is great.
What is not so great is that some people watch 3D movies just for the technology, not for the content.
Titanic is a good example. The movie was made in 1998 and has been shown on TV many times. We are all familiar with the story. But many people bought tickets just to watch the movie again in 3D. The story is the same, but the tickets are very expensive.
Many other movies now use 3D technology. Although 3D can indeed improve the cinematic experience, the plots and storylines are often clunky. The new technology does not really affect the movie's quality. Yet we have to pay more money to watch them because they are in 3D.
Traditional films can make for fantastic viewing experiences, too. Although they may not contain many special effects, they often have captivating storylines.
We should not look only for superficial qualities like 3D technology and special effects in movies. We should also focus on such traditional values as a good plot and top-class acting.

The stuffy air of public spaces
Have you ever been in a public library with poor ventilation? A recent study shows that the air quality in the study rooms of some public libraries is worse than in public toilets.
Sometimes I go to the study room at the Tseung Kwan O public library. Although I did notice that the ventilation there was poor, I didn't know the situation was so serious.
Poor ventilation can cause headaches, fatigue, as well as eye and throat irritation. Regular exposure to poorly ventilated rooms can greatly affect visitors' health.
The authorities need to improve indoor air quality and strengthen air quality guidelines. I suggest that the government add more air purifiers in study rooms. Windows should also be kept open at most times.
You should also go outside regularly, and breathe in some fresh air.

The virtues of being forgiving
Everyone makes mistakes. That includes teachers and parents. The question is: should we forgive others for their mistakes, big or small?
I say yes. Forgiveness is essential for good relationships. By forgiving people we make them feel better, even as we can feel better, too.
It is always better to mend things than to hold grudges. So we should be forgiving towards others.
