Suspected drug dealers flee police, but leave ID cards

Two suspected drug traffickers who reversed their car into a police sergeant and rammed a minibus and a taxi in Mong Kok before running away are being hunted - and officers know who they are looking for.

The pair, a man and a woman in their 30s, left their personal belongings, including their identity cards, in the car.

A police sergeant spotted the grey Ford pulled over in Fife Street at about 11pm on Sunday and went to check on it.

But as he approached, the car reversed into him and then sped away. Police pursued it as it turned into Fa Yuen Street.

Another officer said: 'It rammed into a minibus before running on the wrong side of the road. It also mounted the pavement while making a right turn into Mong Kok Road.'

It was then driven into Sai Yeung Choi Street South.

The officer said: 'The chase ended when it slammed into the back of a taxi which had stopped at a red traffic light and blocked its way.' The man, who was driving the car, and the woman, jumped out and fled.

The sergeant was treated for minor leg injuries at Kwong Wah Hospital; the drivers of the minibus and taxi struck by the car were unhurt. Police discovered illegal drugs - thought to be ketamine, cocaine and Ice - with a street value of HK$16,000 in the car.

An officer said: 'It is possible they were waiting for their buyers as our officer approached them.'

He said it was not known whether the driver was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident. Detectives from Mong Kok district crime squad are investigating the case, and suspect the couple of furious driving, drug trafficking and possession of dangerous drugs.

Police are still investigating whether it was a stolen car.

Separately, officers the from New Territories North traffic unit intercepted 10 cars in Bride's Pool Road, Tai Po, in a crackdown on illegal car racing on Sunday night.

A police spokesman said nine of the vehicles were suspected to have been illegally modified.
