Farrow eyewear strays far from the straight and narrow

Linda Farrow produces some of the wackiest sunglasses - such as smiley faces with crucifix eyes that the wearer can barely peek through. Then again, fashion statements are not necessarily meant to be practical.

The British eyewear brand celebrated the opening of its first flagship store worldwide on Friday in Tsim Sha Tsui's Harbour City mall, and its original sunglasses received a warm welcome.

Established in the 1970s by Farrow, who is recognised as one of the first designers to treat sunglasses as serious fashion accessories, the brand was revamped recently by her son Simon Jablon and daughter-in-law Tracy Sedino.

The couple, who have been working with Joyce fashion boutique and Puyi Optical in Hong Kong for years, flew in from London for the store opening.

The brand is known for its collaborations with the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Dries Van Noten, Jeremy Scott, Charlotte Olympia and The Row. The Olsen sisters, Rihanna and Lady Gaga are fans.

Creative director Sedino said the importance of sunglasses should not be overlooked. 'They go on your face, after all,' she said.

Offering tips for the perfect summer shades, Sedino said: 'For Asian features, I guess you should look for a pair that flatters your cheekbones. And I think cat's eye and small, round lenses will continue to be on trend.'
