Journey up the mountain of love brings Canto-pop frontman to tears

Canto-pop boy band C AllStar shot to fame last year with their hit single Ladder to Heaven, which was inspired by the real-life love story of a couple living in Sichuan province. Liu Guojiang hand-carved 6,000 steps up a remote mountain so his wife, Xu Chaoqing, could travel safely.

It was only recently that the four band members visited the ladder of love. Frontman Andy Leung said the journey had made performing the song a more emotional experience.

The boys are booked for five shows as part of the Hennessy Mix + Party series taking place this month and next. Vocalist Leung almost burst into tears singing the song during the debut show on Friday at Wan Chai's V.wa bar.

'It took us three hours to walk up the 6,000 steps to meet the now widowed Xu,' Leung said. 'It was a really memorable trip and every time I sing this song, I'm even more moved by the story behind it.'

The band will play again tomorrow at Me Too bar in Tsim Sha Tsui and will hit the bars in Causeway Bay on following Fridays until July 27. Check out facebook.com/hennessyhongkong for the series' full schedule.
