As the nation's Jiaolong submersible seeks to reach a record depth of 7,000 metres in the Pacific Ocean, an enigmatic world of marine life awaits the crew on their way down. An estimated 10 million species remain undiscovered in the pitch black of the deep sea, and with fewer than 10 submersibles worldwide capable of reaching depths of more than 1,000 metres, catching sight of them is a rare occurrence.
