Celebrating 40 years, French brand Aigle opens intimate store in Central
Hong Kong fashionistas have long made the pilgrimage to gargantuan malls like IFC and Harbour City for their retail fix, but Aigle is hoping to lure them to a cosier shopping experience with the launch of their latest store on Des Voeux Road.
The French brand already has several outposts throughout the city but the new 780 sq ft shop is their first free-standing store. Artistic director Gideon Day, who flew in specially for this event, described Hong Kong as 'a city that's full of temples of luxury and marble and glass'. He hoped to create a more intimate space via used wood and a beautiful stained glass window on the ceiling of the store.
The opening coincided with the relaunch of their signature Regate boot. The navy rubber boot with white stripes was first developed for the French sailing team to wear at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Handmade by Aigle's master craftsmen in Chatellerault, the softness and durability of the rubber made it a favourite among sailors for decades. To mark its 40th anniversary, Aigle has produced 1,972 pairs worldwide, with each pair retailing at HK$1,380.
That spirit of fashion meeting functionality is what the brand embodies, says Day, adding that Hong Kong weather in the summer can be challenging.
'It can be very wet. It can be very hot. And even when it's very hot, it can be freezing inside. We're a brand that situates ourselves between fashion and function so we have a fashion outlook on our collections but everything has a hidden function to it. If you wear this brand, you're ready for anything.'
