Fashion designer Susanna Ngao of S.Nine kicked off her first Friday Shopping Night with a bang last week. Despite a pending typhoon signal No8 alert, fans braved the gloomy weather for a fun shopping event at Ngao's Central studio.

'I got this idea because I received so many requests from friends and customers that they wanted to have a proper celebration on Friday night. So I figured some eye-candy dresses, free-flowing bubbly and canapes certainly wouldn't hurt,' she said.

The up-and-coming designer, whose fans include the likes of Canto-pop diva Kelly Chen Wai-lam and a long list of TVB starlets and fashionistas, rearranged her collection especially for the event.

'Some might think S.Nine is more on the dressy end, but I arranged the racks according to different occasions to show that there's something for the beach, for work and for parties,' Ngao said.

Guests sipped champagne and nibbled on S.Nine logo-bearing cupcakes, while chatting away with like-minded fellow shoppers.

The designer, a Parsons New York graduate and former Diane von Furstenberg employee, is launching her ocean-inspired resort collection later this month in a rainbow of bright colours and is adding a holiday collection after the autumn-winter range as well.

Asked about her tips for aspiring designers, Ngao said: 'Really it's down to a lot of hard work. You have to be focused and plan your time right. Also try to strike a balance between work and play.'
