A brief but heavy shower early in proceedings was getting most of the credit from trainer Peter Ng Bik-kuen for Taknam's long-shot breakthrough victory in the Gascoigne Handicap (1,600m). 'He's had fetlock problems and missed over a year of racing and the difference today was just that little bit of give in the track,' Ng said. Stewards had downgraded the track from good to firm to just good after the rain, but the hot baking sun ensured the only result of the downpour was better comfort for the horses. Derek Leung Ka-chun was asked to have Taknam handy in the run but the five-year-old couldn't go the speed early. 'I wanted him in the first four or five and he was in the last four or five,' Ng said.
