Romancing in luxury

The honeymoon is often the most anticipated trip of a couple's relationship, and many use it as an opportunity to stretch the budget for a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

Luxury resorts offer all the romance of dreams, with tranquil settings, indulgent treats and a team of staff on hand to make random requests happen. Asia's renowned five-star hospitality makes it an easy choice for a resort honeymoon, even if a growing number of options make the selection process harder.

'Look for resorts that have couples in mind and that offer [unique] experiences,' says Scot Toon, general manager of Paresa Resort in Phuket.

A honeymoon is the perfect excuse to pay a bit more, even for one night at a luxury hotel, and enjoy a romantic experience.

'Our infinity dinner on the island's main swimming pool is extremely romantic, with the waiter walking out through the water to the couple and serving a Champagne dinner, surrounded by stars and the sunset ocean views in front of them,' Toon says.

Paresa is set on a cliff top overlooking the Andaman Sea with private infinity pool villas overlooking the ocean.

On one occasion the hotel was asked to arrange a firework display for a couple dining by the resort's communal infinity pool. The spectacle was so successful that it's now available to all the resort's guests.

'This is something you wouldn't be able to do at home. It's unique and something the couple will remember for the rest of their lives,' Toon says.

Every couple is different, so when it comes to choosing the location, decide what's important during the honeymoon, says Mark Hehir, general manager at One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives.

The One&Only resort is the sole residence on its atoll in the Maldives and offers luxury experiences and activities planned to the last detail in a secluded and exotic location.

Couples can set up their own honeymoon registry, listing the experiences they'd like to enjoy, which wedding guests can purchase as gifts. 'Want to learn more about wine? We can arrange a private tasting with our expert resident sommelier to discover some of the 22,000 bottles at the resort. Enjoyed active sports together in the past? Then maybe scuba diving or deep-sea fishing is right for the couple. One&Only can be as relaxing or as active as the couple chooses,' Hehir says.
