The vibe: W Hotel's new Woobar is ultra-modern and almost self-consciously hip, with lots of gleaming surfaces and marble tabletops. The staff are a pleasure, professional and well-informed with a disarming casual chattiness. I was alone on the night of my visit, but the evening passed pleasantly in conversation with the waitress and hostess. The bartenders were skilful and obviously had a good time showing off their considerable cocktail-making prowess.
The drinks: it's the cocktails that make this bar worth a visit. The Elderflower Diablo (HK$105) from the 'classic, vintage and forgotten cocktails' portion of the menu was delicious, sharp, more complex and less fruity than expected. A Frothy Rhubarb (HK$105) from the 'twist, modern and bespoke' section of the menu was also crisp and refreshing. For the obligatory molecular cocktail, I tried the Hot Bomb Bon (HK$105) - a thick, yellow drink that came in a champagne saucer with a vivid candy-coated rim and was rich and exotic.
The verdict: worth a detour for cocktail lovers, but the location makes it difficult to convert into a larger night out. It's also hard to shake the feeling you're in a hotel bar.
