On Saturday night in the inner courtyard of Hullett House, table after table of people toasted to Martell Cordon Bleu's 100th anniversary with loud, drawn-out yum sengs.

The glamorous black-tie dinner was indigo-lit, the signature colour of Martell's popular cognac. Guests were treated to an acrobatic performance and a live band serenaded with jazz classics throughout the evening.

At the occasion were this year's Miss Hong Kong, Rebecca Zhu, and veteran actors Tony Leung Ka-fai and Rosamund Kwan Chi-lam, who was clad in a beautiful burgundy gown, though both zipped off before the five-course dinner was over.

Centenary celebrations were held in Monaco, the birthplace of Cordon Bleu, and Kuala Lumpur before Hong Kong. According to the brand, China and Malaysia account for more than 90 per cent of its sales, and it is especially popular in southern China. Martell president Pierre Coppere said it looked forward to expanding to other parts of China including Macau and Inner Mongolia.

Martell also launched a limited edition Cordon Bleu for the anniversary. The blue-lacquered bottle comes in a wooden gift box engraved with historic dates. Guests were also given a special souvenir - a custom-made Martell and Hermes tie that was - what else? - a bright shade of blue.
