Planting seeds of awareness

ACTIVE participation by citizens is essential to build up a greener community, according to Environmental Campaign Committee (ECCO) chairman Peggy Lam Pei Yu-dja.

Mrs Lam was speaking at the fifth Environmental Protection Festival organised by ECCO.

'In line with this year's slogan 'Green Community, Green Life', we aim to encourage the public to take part enthusiastically in environmental activities and to put environmental awareness into their daily practices,' she said.

During the two-week festival which has just ended, a variety of activities were organised jointly with major green groups like the Conservancy Association, Friends of the Earth, Green Power and the World Wide Fund for Nature, as well as community bodies, schools and commercial organisations.

Over 700 students from 122 primary and secondary schools planted a 'Commitment Tree' by affixing leaves with green messages.

A refuse collection boat 'Disfloater' from the Marine Department carried officiating guests and participating students on a trip to see how refuse was collected on Hong Kong waters. This was followed by entertainment programmes arranged by the RTHK's Radio Two featuring local singers Anthony Lun, Winnie Lau, Steven Ma and Sugus Lai.
