Champagne and chocolate milkshakes all round as new burger joint packs them in
Foodies and burger connoisseurs descended in droves on BLT Burger's newest store in Causeway Bay's Times Square last Friday. They eagerly sampled burgers and mozzarella sticks while celebrity chef Laurent Tourondel did the rounds making sure everyone was satisfied and sharing some of his hard-earned burger wisdom.
The opening was one of those rare events where a guest could confidently sip from a champagne flute in one hand and a chocolate milkshake in the other, without raising any eyebrows.
Tourondel is a busy man these days, preparing to open three new restaurants in New York right on the heels of his Hong Kong opening, and his culinary empire continues to grow worldwide.
After asking around for advice on where to get the best dim sum in town, the chef shared his favourite BLT order: 'I love the bacon cheeseburger and a milkshake we make in New York; we don't make it here,' he said. 'We make it with Cocoa Puffs [a chocolate breakfast cereal] and peanut butter.'
Tourondel remembers being uncertain about the viability of a hamburger business in Hong Kong.
'When we opened here [in 2009] we were very unsure about the restaurant scene, about the hamburger,' he said. 'The first day [last week] we did 180 covers, today 190 ... it's all good. The exciting part is being in this part of Hong Kong and being in this mall. It is one of the busiest malls in Hong Kong.'
It looks like Hongkongers remain hungry for hamburgers.
