Cost of floating

There are three marinas in Hong Kong where liveaboards can berth: Discovery Bay, the Gold Coast and Aberdeen. There are no more berths available at Discovery Bay - to buy a berth (with debenture) you need to acquire a current liveaboard. Club membership costs extra (HK$900 a month for a family).

The purchase price depends on the size and age of the vessel, but expect to pay from HK$6 million for an 18-metre boat just a few years old. Vessels can also be leased, starting from about HK$45,000 a month. (For current listings contact [email protected])

Additional expenses for liveaboards include Marine Department licence (HK$5,000+ annually), marina club transfer fees (HK$50,000), a survey before purchase (HK$130 a foot plus transport to Aberdeen and slippage), and annual anti-fouling (HK$8,000 to HK$15,000). Owners might also want a boat boy, hired for an average HK$1,800 a month to wash the boat weekly, plus HK$70 an hour for other work such as varnishing the decks.
