Beer necessities

With the possible exception of a tequila shot, nothing goes with a taco like a bottle of cold Mexican beer. Here's some of the best.

Carta Blanca: With a history dating to 1890, the Monterrey brewery Cuauhtemoc-Moctezuma makes all the beers on this list. Carta Blanca is the signature premium brew. It is a light, easy drinking beer.

Dos Equis: this pilsner, enormously popular in Mexico, was originally brewed by German-born Wilhelm Hasse in 1897. It comes as Special Lager and the stronger, Vienna-style Ambar. Dos Equis goes well with citrus and sharp cheeses.

Tecate: this pale lager originally hails from Baja California. Tecate is a cheap, easy-to-drink beer popular across Mexico and with partying US college students. It has a deserved reputation as one of the world's best beers to go with spicy food.

Sol: one of Mexico's most popular beers, Sol is crisp and refreshing, perfect for spicy food on a hot night. Sol is what people who know Mexican beer order instead of a Corona. Try it with a squeeze of lime and some salt.

Bohemia: a beer lover's Mexican beer. Bohemia is a pale pilsner and widely considered one of Mexico's finest beers. It is light enough to have with food, but sufficiently flavourful to have on its own. If you still don't take Mexican beer seriously, try a Bohemia.
