Artist to run for Legco functional seat
Chow Chun-fai, an artist known for his paintings with political themes, will announce his candidacy for the sports, performing arts, culture and publications functional constituency in the September 9 Legco election. Ma Fung-kwok, a former chairman of the Arts Development Council and a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress, has also expressed interest but has yet to declare his candidacy. The incumbent, Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, has yet to indicate whether he will attempt to retain his seat. In his manifesto, Chow calls for the abolition of the constituency by no later than 2020.
2,000 years old but still in style
Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Institute of Textiles & Clothing holds a Fashion Terracotta Warriors Inspired Fashion Design Competition at the Hotel Icon in Tsim Sha Tsui. Prizes worth HK$60,000 will be given for designs on the theme of the Qin dynasty (221-207BC) terracotta warriors buried in Xian , Shaanxi province. The competition coincides with the opening of a multimedia display at the Museum of History featuring figures from the terracotta army.
Privacy chief to discuss Sony and Google
The privacy commissioner for personal data will brief the media to discuss security breaches at Sony PlayStation and concerns over Google Map. In March, the commissioner, Allan Chiang Yam-wang (pictured), said he would continue to put pressure on Google to clarify its privacy policy after Google combined more than 60 privacy policies for its different services into one.
Lessons from Chernobyl for Fukushima
Representatives of Japan's and Ukraine's nuclear-power industries will hold the first meeting of a joint committee established to exchange information on the nuclear accidents in Fukushima-Daiichi in March last year and Chernobyl in April 1986. The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum says the Tokyo meeting will share information on the impact of the accidents on human health and the environment, and on post-disaster measures. The two countries will also organise exchange visits of researchers and engineers.
Taiwanese MPs vote for broadcast regulator
Taiwan's legislature will vote on the government's nominations for key posts in the telecommunications and broadcasting regulator. The cabinet has nominated Professor Howard Shyr and two other academics as well as Chen Yuan-ling, general manager of Integral Investment, to sit on the National Communications Commission, with Shyr nominated its new chairman. Members of the Legislative Yuan's transportation and education and culture committees have expressed strong reservations about the nominations.
Facebook Inc. to announce its first results
Social networking site Facebook is due to announce its first results as a public company after the New York Stock Exchange's closing bell. Despite a steep decline in its share price since its market debut in May, Facebook is still trading at around 70 times earnings, according to Thomson Reuters, whose analysis puts the company's intrinsic value at a modest US$9.72 a share, or about one-third its current value, based on estimates of the company's projected growth for the next decade.
