In view of the massive developments taking place at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), jobseekers interested in working in the aviation industry - and for a world-class institution - have many opportunities to join.

The midfield and third-runway developments, plus HKIA's operations in several airports on the mainland, are offering excellent opportunities for personal development, career advancement and a chance to contribute to Hong Kong's prosperity.

'Currently, we have around 1,150 employees. The job categories with opportunities most often available are airport operations, engineering and projects,' says Christine Chan, general manager for human resources at Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).

The dynamic working environment requires top-notch technical preparedness, but beyond that, AAHK also wants to hire candidates who are passionate about the aviation industry. They should also be good team players with a positive attitude.

AAHK has a comprehensive mission that encompasses high standards of safety, security, operational efficiency and service, environmental consciousness, partnership with stakeholders, valuing human resources and fostering innovation.

'Accordingly, there are six core values - safety, security, environment, quality, efficiency and people - that guide our staff and business partners in their day-to-day work and long-term plans,' Chan says. 'We look for new hires who possess a positive attitude and a passion to develop a career in the aviation industry, and share the core values of the company.'

Apart from individual job requirements, new hires must be good team-players with a customer-focused mindset. They should show adaptability and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of spoken and written English and Chinese are also necessary.

While AAHK mainly recruits in Hong Kong, they may hire overseas when there is a local shortage of special skills.

All new hires participate in a one-day corporate orientation programme, which includes familiarisation with company vision and mission, core values, corporate structure and functions and an airport site walk.

Depending on job requirements and individuals' potential and development needs, various continuous learning and development tools are available, including internal training courses, e-learning, and classroom training. There are management development programmes and study assistance for eligible staff.
