Polite gatecrasher stole girl's heart

Beverly So didn't expect Peter Kwan to crash into her life as easily as he gatecrashed her party, but six years on they are now husband and wife.

Accountant Beverly, 29, married merchant Peter, 31, on May 25 at the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Central. They had a banquet for 400 in the ballroom of the Conrad hotel.

The couple met at Beverly's 24th birthday party in a karaoke bar in Causeway Bay. Peter turned up uninvited with a mutual friend. 'He introduced himself and even shook my hand,' she recalled. 'I had never seen such a polite gatecrasher.'

Peter said he wasn't always that forward, but he liked Beverly as soon as he laid eyes on her. 'I spotted the popular birthday girl surrounded by all her friends. I loved her smile and her cheerful spirit.'

So he asked Beverly out on a somewhat unconventional date. It was the summer of 2006 and he took her to learn hip hop dancing. Later on, they also discovered that they had a shared love of barbecued ribs.

Beverly said she was taken by how Peter cared for her unconditionally. 'Once I had a really bad flu and he accompanied me to the doctor. I rested my head on his shoulder while waiting for my medication, and at that moment I felt so protected,' she said.

On Beverly's birthday in June last year, she thought they were going to celebrate at a restaurant near her home. Instead, Peter surprised her by chartering a helicopter for them to see the skyline. On the roof of The Peninsula hotel, as they were about to take off, Peter got down on one knee and asked to marry her. She had to scream out 'yes' because of the helicopter noise. They spent the evening at the hotel's romantic Felix restaurant. 'It was a fairytale proposal,' she said. 'Very romantic and timed with Top Gun precision.'

Beverly said she admired Peter's charisma and ambition. 'He inspires me to stay motivated and pursue my dreams.'

Peter loves Beverly's positive attitude. 'If I ever have a bad day I will call Beverly and it's a guarantee that she will make me laugh.'
