Turns out Mr Right was there all along

Chris Wu was listening intently to the lecturer when Diana Yuen leaned over and tapped him on the shoulder to strike up a conversation. For Chris, it was love at first sight.

The pair quickly became close friends, however, and Diana didn't want to lose that. It took five years for her to take the plunge - only then she wished she had done it sooner.

Chris and Diana, both 28-year-old pharmacists, are getting married today at the Bethanie Chapel in Pok Fu Lam, followed by a banquet at the Ritz-Carlton with 300 relatives and friends.

The couple were both studying in Melbourne when they met in 2003. After their first encounter in the lecture hall, Chris could not get Diana off his mind. 'I knew she was 'the one' right there and then,' he recalled. 'I'm a firm believer in love at first sight, and I knew she was going to be the one and only love of my life.'

Diana was charmed by Chris' looks and gentle manner, but there was more. 'I felt there was something different about him ... a feeling I couldn't explain,' she said.

For the rest of their university life, they remained close friends.

'Chris was very good with his studies and he always helped me with my homework. It became a habit that every time I had a bad day, I had dinner with Chris. He [always] put a smile on my face,' Diana said.

It was a difficult five years for Chris, as he loved Diana as more than just a friend and tried a few times to confess his feelings. In 2007, he gave her a Christian Dior bracelet bearing the logo 'CD' - also their initials. Diana understood the significance but didn't want to lose a dear friend. ' At that stage I wasn't ready,' she said.

Chris was devastated when Diana returned the gift and thought he'd never love anyone else in quite the same way. His breakthrough came the following summer, though, while they were on their way to a friend's party together. Chris took Diana's hand and held it tightly. To Diana, it felt so natural that she didn't want him to let go.

'That was a moment I will never forget,' Diana said. From then on, they were a couple.

'One week after we started dating, I had a great urge to call him my husband. I felt so strongly that I'd finally found him.'

For years, Diana had a check list of criteria for her Mr Right, but 'I couldn't believe he was right next to me all along', she said. To celebrate their first month together, Chris gave Diana the Dior bracelet back.

The couple moved back to Hong Kong but returned to Australia for a holiday a few years ago. Chris suggested they visit the tourist town of Daylesford in Victoria to celebrate her birthday. It was there that he proposed to her. She said yes.

'I love Diana's cheerful personality, her kindness and, last but not least, her smile. It's magical to me,' Chris said.

The couple will spend their honeymoon in the 'Land of Smiles', soaking up the sun on Koh Samui.
