Confirmed E-coli case being investigated
Health authorities are investigating a confirmed case of E-coli affecting a two-year-old boy. The toddler was suffering abdominal pain and vomiting before being admitted to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital last Sunday. He was discharged two days later in a stable condition.
No quick sales for buyers of discounted homes
Buyers of the discounted Home Ownership Scheme flats will not get to reap the rewards from a quick sale, said housing chief Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung. The Housing Authority will consider setting a time limit to the sale, or allowing flats to be sold in stages, he said. Since the government last month announced the scheme - in which 5,000 used flats will be made available for purchase by lower income families, at a discount, every year from 2016 - prices and sales have surged.
Man found hanged in his garden in Sha Tin
A 50-year-old man was found hanged, with his hands tied, in the garden of his home in Tai Che village, Sha Tin. He was found by his father and son, who went to check on damage caused by the severe Typhoon Vicente. Police are investigating.
Study identifies top issues for city's women
The top issues concerning women are housing, retirement benefits and a lack of child care centres, a women's group study has found. The study, by the Hong Kong Federation of Women's Centres, saw 1,000 grass-roots women between 20 and 80 years old interviewed a few weeks ago. The centre said that the government must consider the needs of women when it sets out policies, such as the need for child care for working women.
Scholar urges media not to glorify suicide
The media has been urged not to oversimplify or glorify suicides, as studies have found that it can inspire copycats. Hong Kong University scholar Paul Yip Siu-fai said yesterday in a seminar with senior executives from media outlets that the media had partly led to the popularisation of suicide by coal burning in Hong Kong, which was almost non-existent in the city in the 1990s. He said that the media should shoulder more responsibility when covering news relating to suicides and avoid simplifying suicidal motives because it may have an negative impact on readers and audiences.
Legco election nominations reach 110
Two more nominations were submitted yesterday for the Legislative Council election in September. One was for the New Territories East constituency, the other for the tourism functional constituency. So far, 110 nominations have been submitted. Nominations close on Tuesday.
