Medal hopeful Lee Wai-sze experienced one of the greatest moments of her sporting career when she led the Hong Kong delegation into the Olympic Stadium in the opening ceremony - and the track cycling star was still in festival mood when she started her first practice session yesterday at the Velopark since arriving in London.
'This is once in a lifetime experience and a great honour to an athlete,' said the 25-year-old. 'As I was marching into the stadium I was struck by how very close I was to competing in this amazing spectacle. And in fact, I found myself silently asking whether I am ready for this.
'I believe I am. Being the flag-bearer has given me extra confidence as I prepare for next week's competition. Whatever happens, this is an experience no one can take away from me.'
Lee, who won a silver medal and a bronze at the same venue during the Olympic Test Event in February, was a bit disappointed not to meet her cycling idol, triple Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy of Britain at the opening ceremony.
'He is a great track rider and he is an inspiration to me, but I am sure there will be a chance to see him in the next few days,' she said.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong athletes had a disappointing first day of competition.
