Yogurt

Versatile enough to belong on the breakfast or dinner table, yogurt has been eaten for millennia. Janice Leung seeks out new cultures

Farmers Union Greek Style Natural Yogurt

This is intensely tangy and rich with the flavour of milk. The Greek-style product is also creamy, moist, smooth and thick. It can be eaten as is if you enjoy sour foods; otherwise, it probably works best in cooking. HK$50.90, 500 grams, Wellcome, citywide

Rachel's Organic Greek Style Natural Bio-Live Yogurt

Unlike most yogurts, which look glossily wet or have a bit of liquid that rises to the top, this one is completely matte and set, like a heavy mousse cake. The flavours are mild; there is neither much sharpness nor milkiness.HK$30, 450 grams, City'super, citywide

Cyclops Organic Thick and Creamy Probiotic Yoghurt

Thick and wobbly like a poorly set panna cotta, this leaves the tongue slightly rough. The flavour of milk has a typical New Zealand deep, grassy tone to it - perhaps too subtle - and it's acidic. Use as a marinade, as it's unpleasant when eaten plain.HK$37.90, 375 grams, ParknShop, citywide

Straus Family Creamery Organic Plain Whole Milk Yogurt

The flavours are subtle but balanced. The slight tanginess is rounded off with a delicate sweetness, making it perfect for eating. It's glossy and smooth and, curiously, has a sticky viscosity that makes it roll off the spoon like honey.HK$40, 454 grams, City'super, citywide

Tamar Valley Classic Natural Yogurt

The rich, milky, vanilla-like sweetness takes the edge off any tanginess. The package says it's 98 per cent fat-free, but rather than being thin and watery, this is creamy and has quite a bit of body to it. It's an easy, everyday eating yogurt for a good price. HK$59.90, 1kg, ParknShop, citywide
