Master storyteller weaves his magic

CALVIN Geoffrey Lieu stole the limelight at the final of the Nutcracker storytelling competition held at Times Square recently. The event was part of Cable TV's promotion for 'The Royal Ballet in the Nutcracker' scheduled to be shown on the station's international channel on Christmas Day.

Calvin, eight, won the championship in the six to eight years age group. Matthew Chiu Tsz-hong was second and Martin Wong Wai-chun third. Wong Yee-shing was the champion in the three to five years age group. Mok Chi-hey came second and Cheng Wing-ya was third. They were awarded Wise Kids gift certificates amounting to a total of $12,000.

Cable TV Operations executive controller May Fung May-kay said: 'We were impressed by their eloquence and creative presentations. They displayed great imagination and acting talent in their interpretation of the story.' Calvin attributed his success to the encouragement and support of his parents and school.

'I was frightened at the start of the competition. The encouragement from my parents and school meant a lot.' His interest in storytelling was also a source of inspiration.

'I am fond of storytelling, especially the story of Thumberlina. My parents are my audience,' said the Primary Three student of St Joseph's School.

His mother, Sandy Lieu, said: 'We are happy to share his joy over the competition. It was a good learning experience for my son.'
