Are these buses safe?

WHILE buses are generally safe, double-decker buses can topple over. Take, for example, the accident on December 12.

While I, in no way, wish to comment on the circumstances of the accident on December 12, I have expressed my concern over safety on buses before - letter headlined, 'Blocked aisles on buses hazardous', South China Morning Post, November 30.

In the event of a double-decker falling on to its side, we have to consider the following facts: Passengers stand on the upper deck and stairs of a bus, especially during rush hours.

Many passengers choose to stand simply because the seats are too narrow.

The seats are so narrow that the aisle-seat passengers often have to stick out over the edge, thus making the aisles impassable.

I hate to think what could happen on a double-decker bus that was packed and that toppled over.
