It is not only journalists who have figured out that the best and fastest way to get out of the main press centre close to the Olympic Park is to use the new Javelin trains, which take just seven minutes to get into central London; so have the US men's basketball team. Unlike the rest of the 10,500 athletes, who are housed at the athletes' village, the NBA millionaires are in five-star luxury in a hotel in the heart of London.

The team, winners over Argentina on Monday night, had to hurry back to the hotel, since coach Mike Krzyzewski wanted an early practice the next day as the competition gets down to the business end. So they went the fastest way - by Javelin train - right along with the common folk, who were stunned to see Kobe Bryant, LeBron James et al, rubbing shoulders with them.

It wasn't long before the excited commuters had posted pictures on Facebook and Twitter. The Americans graciously posed for pictures, and as if that wasn't enough, word is that Bryant and James had also been handing out bars of chocolates to their delighted fellow-passengers.

It seems they were happy to discover a mode of transport much faster than their specially catered-for athletes' bus which, even though it can use the special Olympic lanes, is often caught up in traffic. Sometimes it pays to be a plain Joe and travel with the rest of us.
