Charity sale adds to boon for bookworms
It's shaping up to be a good month for bookworms, with Taiwanese company Eslite due to open its first Hong Kong store on Saturday in Hysan Place, Causeway Bay.
There's also a roaming sale of more than 350,000 books that have been donated to World Vision's Used Book Recycling Campaign, some priced as low as HK$5.
The charity book sale opened at Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill last Thursday and will move on to the atrium of Tuen Mun's TMT Plaza tomorrow, where it will remain until next Thursday.
Physician and former legislator Dr Leong Che-hung officiated at last week's opening ceremony and donated his favourite book - Power and Charity: A Chinese Merchant Elite in Colonial Hong Kong.
The charity has collected almost four million books for the campaign, which has been running for 20 years, and raised more than HK$23.5 million for poverty alleviation projects on the mainland.
It is hoped enough money will be raised from this year's sale to construct a new school building for 1,400 schoolchildren at the Koujiahe Secondary School in Shaanxi.
