Care training on offer

If you didn't manage to get a place at university this year and have always wanted to work with the elderly, an opportunity has come up.

Due to staff shortages, an owner of old people's homes is wooing school leavers with free training and a salary of HK$8,000 a month.

Haven of Hope Christian Service is inviting 40 secondary school leavers, who have completed Form Five or Six but failed to gain a place for higher study, to sign up.

One recruit, Anita, 19, has found the job very fulfilling, despite her family's initial opposition.

'Some of my friends are selling mobile phones on the street, without a plan for their lives,' she said. 'I think the programme allows me a clearer path and I find it meaningful.'
