BRAZIL'S Ronaldo Costa won the San Silvestre New Year's Eve road race in Sao Paulo on Saturday.

Costa, 24, completed the course in 44 minutes 11 seconds and claimed a first prize of US$10,000. Silvio Guerra of Ecuador was second in 44:14.

The men's race was run in relatively fine weather, without the driving rain that hindered the women's race.

Mexico's German Silva, the New York City Marathon champion, was third and Brazil's Venderley Lima was fourth.
