TAKE-TWO in the American green card lottery brought a warning from US officials in Hong Kong that companies offering to expedite or guarantee permanent resident visas were issuing false promises.

The second worldwide lottery this year is also only the second that Hong Kong residents have been allowed to enter and thousands of applications are expected for what an American Consulate-General spokesman said would be 'hundreds rather than thousands' of places.

A total of 55,000 visas are issued each year under the lottery programme to areas of the world that have low immigration rates to the United States.

For last year's lottery, more than six million entries were received and most winners took up the opportunity to emigrate to the United States.
