Unfair treatment

TUEN Mun residents have been ignored by Chris Patten's government. Tuen Mun's population is large, for example, it is more than double that of Junk Bay. And yet, despite this, the Government has declined to build a separate new road or railway connecting Tuen Mun with Tsuen Wan.

I think it is ridiculous that there should be no such link in existence or in the pipeline, and I was amazed to learn that the Government was extending the MTR not to Tuen Mun, but from Lam Tin to Junk Bay. The fact is that congestion on the Tuen Mun Road adversely affects people's lives.

Tuen Mun people have to pay the same taxes as those who live in more central locations, but they are treated differently. The Hong Kong Ferry Company does not provide a satisfactory or reliable ferry service for those commuting to Central. Most commuters have to wait at least 30 minutes before they can get on board. Many residents have complained to the Government. Those complaints have been ignored.

Sha Tin residents can use Tolo Harbour Road or the KCR. However, Tuen Mun people can only use Tuen Mun Road. Hong Kong Island residents can commute by means of the Eastern Corridor and also have the MTR.

Why is Tuen Mun neglected? Tuen Mun residents should not remain silent. We should stand up and speak our minds. We are not being treated fairly and the Government should realise this.
