Pupils told the secret of success

PASSING examinations is far from the most important aim in life. Hong Kong offers more career paths and opportunities for advancement, particularly to those who are willing to work, to try, and to learn.

Speaking at the Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School speech day, guest-of-honour Legislative Councillor Andrew Wong Wang-fat told the graduates: 'If you have not scored highly in your examinations, but you have really tried your best, do not despair.

'One must not easily give up. Being consistent and hardworking are the keys to success,' Mr Wong said.

He said learning was a never-ending process.

'Young people should have an inquiring mind and be receptive to new ideas,' Mr Wong said.

Principal Tsu Gee-chong spoke of a number of new activities the school had introduced during the year.

With a view to broadening students' knowledge, the school had offered a new subject on Travel and Tourism for Form Four arts students.

The curriculum for this subject had been approved by the Hong Kong Examinations Authority and would be included in the HKCEE this year, Mr Tsu said.

In addition, a learning assistance programme on homework counselling was introduced. This counselling unit was being run by a team of counsellors who helped students three times a week.

To encourage good reading habits, the school had formed an English Extension Reading Scheme in 1992.

'The majority of junior form students have joined the scheme and the school is ensuring English standards are maintained,' said Mr Tsu.

He added that the school also encouraged students to take part in various school activities and social services.

'Seminars and talks that emphasised the teaching of moral and civic education were organised with the aim of raising students' civic and moral awareness.' In concluding his remarks, Mr Tsu thanked his colleagues.

'Their support and understanding are greatly appreciated. They not only serve the school, but also offer tremendous help to the development of our school.

'I am pleased that our staff have continued to demonstrate their ability to meet change and challenge, offer new initiatives and shoulder greater responsibilities.'
