CHIEF Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang is to lead a delegation to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland this month, officials said yesterday.

The trip has been described as part of 'calculated moves' to heighten the profile in the global community of the most senior local Chinese official.

Mrs Chan will be accompanied by prominent business figures including Hongkong Bank chief executive John Gray, shipping magnate Helmut Sohmen and Brian Chau Tak-hay, Secretary for Trade and Industry, during the six-day stay in Davos.

It will be the first time Mrs Chan has attended the annual forum, which will be attended by senior government and business leaders from around the world.

A government official said: 'Certainly, it is a calculated move to get more exposure for the Chief Secretary overseas.' Mrs Chan has paid visits to the United States, Britain and other European countries during her first year as the Chief Secretary.

Her schedule this year includes another trip to Europe. She will lead a major trade delegation to Japan in the autumn.

The official admitted that the overseas trips of Mrs Chan were part of the moves by the Governor to boost international interest in Hong Kong as 1997 drew near.

Maintaining international concern about the territory would be extremely important, the official said.
