THERE are few certainties in racing, but Irish import Jewellery Star must surely fall into that very slim category.

Trainer Neville Begg took over the training of the Bluebird entire two months ago and his hard work was almost rewarded in the sixth event last night when he finished a fighting second to controversial winner Flying High.

That was over 1,235 metres and these days it is definitely on the short side for him. But this was an excellent first-up run for his new trainer and he is absolutely ready to win the next time he steps out, but ideally it will be over a mile.

Jewellery Star is versatile in that he can handle both tracks, but if his new trainer sets him for a mile race at the Valley . . . get on.

In not quite the same category is the Peter Ng Bik-kuen trained Smooth Journey who went much better last night in the third event.

Smooth Journey battled on quite well to finish just adrift of Schnitzer and it was a tremendous improvement on his last start when he finished last.
