A PROPOSAL to hand over the supervision of all Vietnamese camps to non-government agencies was rejected yesterday. The Correctional Services Officers' Association says its members are reluctant to supervise the centres because they are often subject to 'unfair criticism'. It also worries that staff may lose their jobs when the camps are closed.

The Tai A Chau centre is managed by the UN, but the High Island and Whitehead camps are supervised by the Correctional Services Department. Yesterday, a Security Branch spokesman said other workers could not take over the supervisory role for security reasons.
