Trip for essay winners

HONG KONG students have the chance to win attractive prizes including round-trip air tickets in an essay writing competition to promote World Water Day.

The Water Supplies Department and the Education Department are lending their support to the Asia Pacific Group (ASPAC) of the International Water Supply Association (IWSA) in promoting the United Nations' World Water Day on March 22.

An essay competition with the theme of 'water is life' was launched earlier this week to commemorate the day and promote Hong Kong students' awareness of the protection and conservation of the territory's scarce water resources.

March 22 of each year is declared World Water Day.

The declaration is to recognise the importance of water resource development to economic productivity and social well-being, the growing scarcity of water and the promotion of water conservation.

All full-time secondary school students can participate in the competition. Prizes, including round-trip air tickets courtesy of British Airways, will be awarded to the winners.

Deputy Director of Water Supplies William C. G. Ko said their essays might also be published in well-known publications.

Students can send their entries in either English or Chinese to the IWSA-ASPAC Secretary, c/o Water Supplies Department, before March 6.
