Red Jeans looks likely to fit bill

GRIFFIN Red Jeans is going in the right direction judging by his fast-finishing third in the opening event on yesterday's card at Sha Tin.

Red Jeans is by Valid Appeal, sire of Northern Fire Ball, and is certainly going to appreciate more ground than 1,000 metres. But he surged through late and, at this formative stage of his career, should be solidly borne in mind when the juveniles step up in distance.

He raced without being noticeably green and will surely learn plenty from this.

There was plenty of support for Small Wonder in the Class Two short sprint for the Volunteers Cup - but it may have come a run too soon and over a trip too sharp.

A winner over seven furlongs in Ireland, he is up to winning a race having been only lightly raced there.

He should be kept in mind for a 1,400-metre event because he does have the ability. He finished fifth behind tearaway winner Hainan Dragon and will definitely come on from this.

Perkyman ran a fair race in the eighth yesterday and may not be too far away from winning. He was responsible recently for a good trial at Happy Valley and a similar 1,400-metre event at the city track could be just what the gelding is after.

Winning Stallion went off at 70-1 in the fifth event and finished seventh in the full field of 14. It was a highly competitive event and Winning Stallion was not out of place - although he was off a rating of 33 and carried 117 pounds.

In Class Five he would certainly shape as a very solid bet.
