Enjoy a study visit to Japan

THREE undergraduates from Hong Kong universities will enjoy a trip to Japan this summer to experience the Japanese way of life.

The students will be recipients of scholarships from Japan Airlines (JAL) under its JAL Scholarship Programme.

This year, 42 students will be selected from 12 countries and regions in Asia-Pacific; with three chosen from Hong Kong.

'I learned a lot from the JAL Scholarship Programme,' said Raymond Cheng, one of last year's winners and an undergraduate at City University.

'Spending more than a month with many other students from different countries, I was exposed not only to the culture of Japan but also to that of different countries.

'The programme opened my eyes and developed my interpersonal skills. Those experiences will be of great use in future.' Applications for this year's JAL Scholarship Programme can be made by writing an English essay on the 'Emerging Pluralism in Asia and Oceania: Within and Between Nations'.

Those interested can contact the student affairs office at their respective schools for details.

The scholarship winners leave for Japan on July 20 and will stay for five weeks. They will attend a summer session of Asian studies at Sophia University and also take part in field trips and home stays.

All expenses, including travel, insurance, tuition, lodgings and books are sponsored by the airline.

Inaugurated in 1975, the JAL Scholarship Programme provides students around the Asia-Pacific region with an opportunity to visit and study in Japan, gaining an insight into the culture and traditions of the country and its people.
