AUSTRALIA'S Champion Racehorse of 1993-94, Mahogany, returned to his pedestal yesterday when he scored an authoritative victory in the Group One Lightning Stakes (1,000 m) at Flemington, writes Graeme Kelly.

Ridden by Mick Dittman, who had made a comeback to the 'big time' with a treble the previous day, Mahogany stormed home from sixth at the 400 metres to defeat Alannon and Keltrice.

The hot favourite Hareeba, who had scored a sensational win in The Australia Stakes (1,200 m) at his previous outing, was a disappointing fourth.

The success of the Lee Freedman-trained Mahogany, who was having his first outing since suffering a back injury in the spring, took his record to 15 wins three seconds and four thirds from his 25 outings for prize winnings of A$2,682,208.

Freedman said Mahogany would now contest the Group One A$201,000 Futurity Stakes (1,400 m) at Caulfield on Saturday week.
